Our Funeral CostsUnless we’ve been through it before, and probably relatively recently, few of us will know what to do when someone dies. Naturally, it can all be quite overwhelming, and there’s no handy bereavement checklist to refer to, so any guidance and advice as you go about it will be helpful. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the services you come across managing the situation will all be accustomed to helping in a sympathetic way and with practical advice, so don’t be afraid to ask for assistance at any point.
For a death at home, you should first contact the deceased’s doctor, who will confirm the death and issue a Medical Cause of Death certificate, which will allow you to register the death. If the death happened in hospital, a hospice or a care home, they will organise this aspect for you. From here you can contact us on our 24-hour service and we can start with the funeral arrangements.
If the death was unexpected or the doctor is unable to determine the cause of death, the deceased may need to be taken into care by the Coroner for a post-mortem. If an inquest is required, you won’t normally have to wait for it to arrange a funeral.
You should be registering the death within five days of it happening and ideally in the district in which it happened. This will be by appointment only at the local Registrar’s office. If you are unable to attend in person, you can do this at your nearest office by declaration. In either case, you’ll need to take the Medical Cause of Death certificate and some identification for yourself. (More often than not, the doctor’s surgery or hospital will send the Medical Cause of Death certificate direct to the registrars for you). If possible you should also take the deceased’s birth certificate, NHS card and marriage certificate (if applicable).
Once you get in touch with your chosen undertaker, they will be able to advise on how to arrange a funeral and help with all the required details. Here at Ian Hart Funerals, we’re happy to welcome you into our office to discuss the arrangements, or we can visit you at your home – whichever is more convenient or comfortable for you.
Among the things we’ll need to discuss with you are: a suitable date and location, the coffin or casket, flowers and/or donations and general details about the type of funeral service you would like. Don’t worry if you can’t provide all the answers from the outset, there will be time to fine tune the details. We’ll also make sure we provide as precise a quotation for our services as possible so that you know what can be managed with your budget.
Ian Hart Funerals has been a leading local undertaker in and around Worthing, Shoreham and Littlehampton for many years. During that time we’ve helped hundreds – if not thousands – of families with their funerals and we’re proud of our reputation as reliable and affordable local funeral directors.
